The original standard is the proprietary systems. These were developed for commercial use, and made it virtually impossible for cable TV networks to use cable modems from other companies on their systems.
The first new standard is the DAVIC/DVB standard, and this is primarily used in Europe. The second new standard is the MCNS standard, and this is mostly used in the United States. The third and final new standard is IEEE, and they lost the first round of cable modem standards. They are currently trying to create the third generation of cable modems.
